What Is a Holiday?

Holiday pay for part-timers
Part-time workers are entitled to holiday pay. The amount of time off you are entitled to is based on your employment contract. However, many employers offer less holiday pay for part-time employees than full-time employees. It’s important to understand how your holiday entitlement is calculated.
Most companies offer at least 24 days of holiday entitlement plus eight bank holidays. However, the average number of paid holidays is nine. Some businesses also close on specific holidays.
Part-time employees have similar annual leave entitlements to full-time employees. Employees who work five days a week are entitled to 5.6 weeks of annual leave. A non-exempt employee who works 40 hours per week is also eligible for overtime pay.
Full-time and part-time workers accrue their holiday entitlements pro-rata. This means that if you work 20 hours a week, you get a corresponding eight-hour holiday. Generally, you are also entitled to a travel allowance.
